Her old ideas of being worthless are challenged as she begins to wish she could help them through their grief. 

Reality begins to beg the question: was her life as meaningless as she always believed?

About the Author

Charlotte Witvoet is a sixteen-year-old who has struggled her whole life with mental illness. After years of mental hospitals, therapy, and a cocktail of medication, this novel pulled her through the most difficult times in her life. She continues to be an advocate for mental health, LGBTQ+ equality, and sexual assault.

She hopes this will be the first book of many she writes that will make a difference.

About the Author

Timothy Aberle was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the age of eight, his family migrated to Dana Point, California. Growing up with two brothers, he learned the importance of friendship and loyalty. Regularly attending Saint Edwards Catholic Church with his family, he developed a strong interest in religion and decided to research as many different religions as possible throughout his years. 

Having an eccentric imagination, he drew inspiration through different genres of music and adventurous movies. Growing up on the beaches of Strands and Salt Creek, he grew a deep respect and love for the ocean. His love for the ocean fueled his imagination and daydreaming about the unknown became normal. While others found surfing and boogie boarding to be great pastimes, Timothy often wrote short stories and songs in a journal and spent much of his time at the local library reading Stephen King books. It wasn’t till he attended Dana Hills High School that Timothy enrolled himself in a bible literature class in search of further educating himself on religion. At this time, he penned a short story called Cain’s Fury as a project for class and received high praise for its creativity. 

A big turning point in Timothy’s life was when his mother, Donna, fell ill to a rare deadly disease called scleroderma. His mother stricken with grief, desperately turned to reading inspirational books about Angels to help cope with the stress of being sick. Through chemotherapy and heart wrenching times, Timothy witnessed the courage of both his mother and father. On October 3rd, 1999 tragedy fell over Timothy’s household when his beloved mother, Donna, passed away. 

Moving back to Las Vegas to start over, Timothy fell in love with a young lady with a love for books. After sharing his short story, Cain’s Fury, with the young lady who he would soon marry, she encouraged him to allow his imagination to go to work and he began writing his debut novel. Using Cain’s Fury as the template, Chronicles of Kane was born. 

Timothy resides in Las Vegas with his wife and two children, Dean and Sam. He works for a luxury home builder as a service technician and remains hard at work on Legacy of Kane, the next volume in the Kane Trilogy.

A continuation of the story, With Mirth and Laughter: Finding Joy in Medicine After Cancernow moves beyond the early days of breast cancer treatment, including surgery, medication, and physical therapy, and further describes how a cancer diagnosis impacts her friendships, family dynamics, teaching and mentoring roles. More importantly, it changes her practice style and view of what it means to provide patient centered care. This book includes story after story of patient interactions, some ironic, many humorous, but all poignant and compelling; they serve to illustrate how being in one role ultimately benefits the other.

Dr. Thompson also chronicles how becoming a patient changes her approach in how she teaches and trains future physicians. Those in academic medicine or in a teaching role of any kind can relate. Cancer survivors as well as health care providers will appreciate the observations and shift in perspective as she moves from doctor as patient to patient as doctor. All the while, Dr. Thompson maintains her keen sense of humor, sharing many amusing stories about primary care, academic medicine, and even the somewhat harrowing process of becoming a writer.

Dr. Heather Thompson Buum is an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She graduated from Hamline University in 1993 with a BA in biology, then went on to complete both medical school and residency at the University of Minnesota. She joined the faculty in 2002 and devotes half her time to patient care, practicing both outpatient primary care and inpatient hospital medicine. The remaining time, she spends in various teaching and administrative roles. She formerly served as an associate program director for the internal medicine residency and now is a course director for Human Health and Disease and a small group facilitator for Essentials of Clinical Medicine in the medical school. Dr. Thompson has won numerous awards for both teaching and patient care, including Outstanding Medical School Teacher in 2016, the Department of Medicine Clinical Excellence Award in 2013, and Minnesota Monthly’s Top Doctors for Women in 2013 and 2011. She is a member of the Society for General Internal Medicine and a fellow in the American College of Physicians. Her outside interests include choral music, performing with the Oratorio Society of Minnesota for over twenty years. She also enjoys cooking, running, and an occasional round of golf. She lives with her husband and two children in St. Paul.
