Jennifer Deutsch

Jennifer Deutsch is Reading Intervention Teacher who lives in upstate New York.

โ€œI have a hard-working husband who supports all of my endeavors, and two beautiful children who are growing bigger by the day.  I work to balance this thing we call life, and it is not always easy.  I am constantly looking for easier ways to do things, ways to save time, and stay organized. I work with inner-city students who have so much resting on their shoulders but who deserve the same chance at becoming great readers and having amazing teachers as any other child in America. I work to show my students how many doors will open for them when they learn how to be great readers. I try to teach my students and my own children that good things come with time, dedication, and hard work.โ€

A once tight family is not the same after an unexpected tragedy. The curveball life has thrown at them brings a weight of sadness to the family. Siblings find themselves with a new set of expectations, responsibilities, and a drastic change in their lives. The relationship between them is pushed to new boundaries. Envy, jealousy, rivalry, and fear work together, slowly trying to destroy what was once a happy nuclear family.

What happens when the patriarch of the family goes through a life-changing illness, putting even more stress on the siblings? Those left behind find themselves losing touch, growing apart, each processing the loss in their own way. Expectations change, misunderstandings accrue, and one sibling turns to deceit as the answer.

After each setback and adversity, Kaleigh finds herself leaning on an old friend. Trying to stay positive through it all, she finds herself needing him more, but jealousy has turned him away. Feeling trapped in her sorrow, will Kaleigh be able to pick up the pieces and find the strength to move on? Will the siblings be able to forgive each other? Will they have the chance to rebuild their relationship? Will they each find, their path to happiness?

DETOURS: A Novel about the Resiliency of the Human Spirit

Everybody has a story. Everyone is on a journey.
A love story that will touch your heart.

Haley Duncan is a high school English teacher. At thirty-nine-years old, she has already experienced more than enough tragedies in her life after facing the death of her husband and her own infertility. In an attempt to jump-start her life and fill her empty spaces of time, she starts volunteering at the local Service Dog Association. After much persuasion, she reluctantly agrees to finish raising one of their puppies when its puppy raiser becomes ill. This has heartbreak written all over it, keeps running through her mind as she embarks on this journey. But knowing that this puppy could change someoneโ€™s life for the better, Haley embraces the challenge ahead of her.

Mark Lancer is a forty-five-year-old divorced father and state policeman whose life certainly has not gone as planned. Within five months, his son left for college, his wife filed for divorce, and his accident happened. All three life-changing events left him bitter and angry. The worst one being the head trauma from the accident that left him with seizures. As he faced an unknown future, his son MJ urged him to apply for a service dog.
โ€œIโ€™ll be advertising to the world that Iโ€™m disabled,โ€ he argued. But finding it hard to say no, he reluctantly agreed to fill out the application.

When Jed, a service dog, brings together Haley and Mark, both are surprised by their instant attraction for each other. But can these two tragedy-riddled people overcome their pasts and open their hearts to a new beginning? Can giving love a second chance mend two broken hearts and change the path of their lives?

What happens when tragedy strikes . . . and changes everything?

Carol Fricke is a retired teacher and coach from Derry Township School District in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She grew up in Fryburg, a small town. After high school, she attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she competed on their gymnastics team. Following graduation, she moved to Hershey where she spent the next thirty-five years teaching Health and Physical Education at Hershey High School and coaching gymnastics for thirty of those years.

Being an animal lover her entire life, Carol knew her retirement had to involve her passion for dogs. She started volunteering with the Susquehanna Service Dogs in Grantville, Pennsylvania after reading about the organization in a local paper. The trainers, volunteers, puppy raisers and dogs that she met there inspired her to write.

Carol shares her life with her husband, a daughter, a granddaughter, and two Newfoundland dogs. She spends her time playing music, tennis, and as vice-chair for the South Hanover Township Parks & Recreation Board.

Amra Podrug Kratina

Amra Podrug Kratina was born in Foca, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Life had always been hard on me. It kept playing with me and tormenting me, making me anxious and scared at every step of my life. Nevertheless, I did not lose hope and surrender myself into its evil trap. I freed myself from the hold it had on me.

My life in Bosnia was so gruesome that I donโ€™t even want to think of it anymore. It scares me to death when the episodes of my life in Bosnia flash before my eyes. I am no longer trapped there, but the memories linger on. As I share my harrowing journey with you, I admit it wonโ€™t be easy for me to talk about it, but I have to face my fears and past demons and free myself. That is something I have learned by going through hell for years.

I have learned the hard way that in difficult times, people rarely come forward to help you. They fancy insulting and mocking you rather than sympathizing with you. All the hardships I went through were frightening and full of mishaps and anguish.

I am ready to tell you my life story, hoping it will inspire you to be bold and courageous and take control of your life.

U.S. BOOK SHOW RETURNS TO NEW YORK AS A HYBRID EVENT

The third annual U.S. Book Show returns to New York City as a four-day hybrid event, May 22โ€“25, 2023, taking place live at NYUโ€™s Kimmel Center and livestreaming for a virtual audience of publishing professionals, librarians and booksellers. Meg Medina, the National Ambassador for Young Peopleโ€™s Literature and Newbery Medalist whose middle-grade books dive into Cuban American and Latino culture, will give the morning keynote on Childrenโ€™s Books Day, May 24, 2023.

Celebrity and A-list authors open each show day with not-to-be-missed keynote addresses. Focused on whatโ€™s hot for Fall 2023, the show features themed author panels, authors in conversation and the highly acclaimed Editorsโ€™ Picks series.

โ€œAAPI Community in Conversations,โ€ featuring authors, creators and librarians, is a new highlight of opening day, Monday, May 22, 2023. The special livestreaming event centers around Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voices, books, cultures and experiences. The program is a collaborative effort from Publishers Weekly, the University of South Carolinaโ€™s Augusta Baker Endowed Chair and Penguin Random House Library Marketing.

On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, a day of live educational programming designed for agents, editors and publishing professionals will be presented by the Association of American Literary Agents (AALA). The much anticipated day will feature panels, networking sessions and bring the industry together for continuing education around issues of mutual interest.

Two targeted, livestream-only tracks include a new program for publishing professionals moderated by Publishers Weekly editors that will take up hot-button issues such as publishing salaries. โ€œLibraries Are Essential,โ€ the well-regarded slate of discussion panels for librarians and curated by Publishers Weeklyeditor Andrew Albanese, will run on Tuesday.

The show dedicates days to various segments of the industry, including comics and graphic novels (Tuesday), adult titles (Wednesday) and childrenโ€™s books (Wednesday). Editorsโ€™ Picks panels, to be held virtually, cap off the event on Thursday with preeminent book editors in conversation with Publishers Weekly reviews editors.

โ€œWe are pleased to extend the success of the first two years of the U.S. Book Show into this yearโ€™s live and livestreaming event for the entire publishing and bookselling community,โ€ said Cevin Bryerman, CEO and publisher of Publishers Weekly, noting that the return of the virtual exhibit hall and popular Grab-a-Galley Hall will allow all comers to receive galleys of forthcoming Fall books.

Buzz has already started in the book publishing industry among publishers, librarians, booksellers and literary agents about the event, which is presented by Publishers Weekly and hosted by NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts.

Tanay Pant

Tanay Pant is a student who lives with his family and dog in Illinois. He has been writing for as long as he can remember, starting out with scrappy comic books made out of notebook paper before completing Connection Terminated, his second published novel. In his spare time, he enjoys writing for the school newspaper, playing sports with his friends, or listening to music a bit louder than he should.

โ€œThere were twelve people, alive and breathing,
on this submarine yesterday. Today, there are ten.โ€

When Elijah Smith, an acclaimed Navy recruit, was given the opportunity to board a real submarine with nine other recruits to test their mental, physical, and tactical prowess, he was ecstatic. Even better, his best friends, Rohan and Laila, had been selected as well! After months of dedication, it seemed like things were finally going his way. Hours later, however, as he and his friends go to investigate a disturbance, they begin to realize that they are trapped with a murderer . . . ten-thousand feet underwater.

As events continue to unfold rapidly, alliances and rivalries are made and torn as crewmates discover clues, attempt to fix sabotaged hardware, and figure out a way to communicate with the surface. Relationships between siblings, friends, and past mentors are put under tremendous strain. Questions and accusations are thrown around for the killerโ€™s identity. Losing faith in those around him, Elijah struggles with his own personal questions of sanity and insomnia. What can he do if he canโ€™t even trust himself?

Only one thing is clear. As the death toll increases, the survivors must find a way to work together. Otherwise, the beautiful vessel they were so excited to board may soon become their coffin.

Melissa Young

It found me when I was born into severe poverty. It showed itself when I was receiving last rites in a hospital bed. Then it held me as I stood next to the President of the United States and the First Lady at the Inaugural Ball.

It was faith. My faith in God has never wavered. He has sustained me through an unimaginable illness with an unrelenting determination to stay alive for my precious son, Jack.

I am proof that the human spirit, grounded in Godโ€™s love, is more powerful than the ills that can attack our bodies. Iโ€™m still alive because for some reason God needs me to be. There must be more for me to do, and maybe this book is that thing. Baring my soul and reliving each moment to share it with you was one of the most gut-wrenching things Iโ€™ve ever had to do, but I was determined to not allow my life story to die with me, and now it wonโ€™t.

My son Jack is my legacy. I will live on through him and the pages of this memoir, a life lived and written by me.
