Lori Kaplan and her husband, Alan Silberman, were just like many young couples who worked hard to achieve their dreams. They bought their first house. Alan had a great job at Microsoft. Lori had completed the first year of a prestigious post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago. They had a happy, gorgeous baby girl, Jaclyn, and had wonderful dreams and expectations for what her life would be. But at one month of age, Jaclyn was diagnosed with Complex Congenital Heart Disease, putting them on a different path than what was planned.
“Now remember, you might go home today without a baby,” said the surgeon as he carried their six-week old into the first of many surgeries.
Jaclyn’s Journey: Dancing through Life in Spite of Chronic Illness is an inspirational memoir about how a child lived with heart disease without letting it take over her life. With encouragement and love from her parents, she persevered, adapted to circumstances when necessary, and tried to live as “normal” a life as possible, in spite of challenging health issues. Jaclyn taught many people how to live fully. She danced through life with a smile, with laughter, and with a lot of love.

Author Lori Kaplan is a stay-at home mom. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Family Social Science, worked at the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago, and taught graduate level courses at the University of Chicago in the Department of Social Service Administration. Her research has been published in scholarly periodicals and presented at professional conferences.
