I have been witness to fundamental changes within the healthcare system during the time of my chosen career path. I see the emergence of problems in the delivery of healthcare which perhaps are still value neutral, but which I believe are trending toward negative outcomes. After all, what doctors are supposed to do is deliver healthcare. I am disturbed by what I see, and I wish to bring this to the awareness of you, the consumer. Aha! A timely example of change! Doctors are no longer termed doctors. We are now “providers.” You are no longer termed “patients.” You are now “consumers.”

So, as my career drifts relentlessly towards its dusk, I wish to share some thoughts with you and give you a distillation of what I have learned during the past 46 years since I was anointed with an “MD” degree.

Dr. Barry Marmorstein

Author Barry Marmorstein, M.D., specializes in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Diseases. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He completed a fellowship in Critical Care and Pulmonary Disease at the University of Colorado in Denver.

Dr. Marmorstein had a solo practice in Pulmonary Diseases and Internal Medicine in Bellevue, Washington, for 36 years. He was then given an offer which he could not turn down. This would allow him to complete the journey “home,” in the image of Dr. Goldstein, to work as a PCP in a small town in the mountains 70 miles east of Seattle.

Married and with two children, he lives on a lake on the edge of a national forest, able to pursue his other interests including running, exploring the natural wonders in his back yard, and especially pushing steadily to "wake up."
